The history of the kickbike

Coming from Finland, this sport is practiced in summer on the handlebars of a sports scooter, and in winter, thanks to a wide choice of Esla and KICKSPARK kicksleds .

The Kickbike® (registered trademark) was developed by Hannu Vierikko in the 90s. This young medical student, snow scooter racing champion, developed the most efficient and fastest scooter for adults in the world. Thanks to its front wheel the size of a bicycle, the scooter is very stable and allows you to move at a speed close to that of a conventional bicycle.

Scootering is a beneficial physical exercise for maintaining your health. It allows you to maintain and improve your form at any age. During regular training, the improvement in cardiovascular capacity is remarkable. By practicing a dynamic thrust with the knee well raised forward, the work of the lateral abdominals contributes to the strengthening of the back muscles, especially the lower lumbar ones.

During the push, by changing feet every 3 to 10 kicks, the muscles of your two legs work harmoniously. No impact by impact of the foot (unlike running), nor blocking the position of the body (cycling), but on the other hand a very physical training for your glutes. Scootering is a beneficial physical exercise for maintaining your health. During regular training, the improvement in cardiovascular capacity is remarkable.

The scooter can be used both as a means of transport requiring less physical effort, maintaining a pace of around 15km/h, and in a sporty way at a training speed between 21 and 25 km/h. In a more general way, it should be considered that one moves on the flats about twice as fast as while running.

Various records requiring excellent physical condition have been established by the Finnish Alpo Kuusisto:

  • On August 14, 1999, he set the Kickbike marathon record in Helsinki: 42 km. in 1 hour 20 minutes and 03 seconds
  • On August 31, 2002, he set the record for 24 hours on a scooter with a total of 519 km
  • On August 25, 2003, he traveled Paris-Brest-Paris in 85 hours for 1200 km (faster than many bicycles!)

The downhill speed record is 92km/h.
